The Basic Principles of Trading & Investing

Trading Tips
1a Market Basics

When you work a job, you’re basically exchanging time for money: the more hours you work, the more money you make. It’s a good way to get by but a bad way to build wealth, because eventually you simply run out of hours.

That’s why if you want to grow wealth quickly, you need to make your money work for you. How? By investing and trading in the financial markets. Okay, so think of the financial markets as a garden where you grow well, just like you plant a seed and watch it grow.

In the financial markets, you can invest a small amount in companies, real estate, foreign currencies, and other securities, then share in their profits as they grow in value, and thanks to a financial principle called compound interest, your take becomes bigger and bigger every year. For instance, let’s say you invest $1,000 in Company A.

In the first year, they grow 15%, meaning you make 150 dollars, bringing your total to $1,150. Then the next year, they grow another 15%. But instead of making 15% on $1,000, you make 15% on your new total $1,150 which translates into $172.50 for the year, and $1,322.50 total.

Do this a couple more years and you will have doubled your money without lifting a finger, but if you never invested that $1,000 you wouldn’t have earned anything.

In fact, your money would have decreased in value due to the rising cost of living or inflation, even with an inflation rate of 5%, that $1000 would have lost a third of its value in ten years. So, clearly investing is the better way to go but how do you do it without taking on too much risk?

First off, you should put enough money into savings and insurance to protect yourself in the event of a downturn or adversity.

Second, if you’re just starting out, you can focus on regular investing or trading.

Regular investing allows you to accumulate wealth in the long run, while trading enables you to capture consistent short-term gains to grow your capital quickly, provided you understand behavioral analysis and market timing.

Finally, once you’ve established a large capital base, you can choose to buy and hold for the long term to generate capital gains and passive income, or use long term trading strategies to manage your portfolio effectively but those are just the basics.

There are many instruments for trading and investing, and in order to grow wealth on the market, you’ll need to understand how they work.

So next, let’s take a closer look at one of the most common types of investments: stocks.

Meeting the Wolf of Wallstreet – LIVE!

News & Events

On Tuesday, I attended the Wolf of Wallstreet World Tour in Singapore at RWS Sentosa, and got the chance to meet Jordan Belford live at the event! It was an extremely huge crowd, and the air was buzzing with excitement.

Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get a photo with him as I had to leave early, but thankfully there were many great take-aways from his talk.

The Man of the Moment - Jordan Belford!

He started off by telling us that “getting rich is really easy – if you know how”, and backed this up by providing a roadmap of the inner and outer skillsets required to achieve this success and riches.

There are 2 types of people:

  1. Reasons people
These people do not like to take action, and tell themselves a narrative (excuses) that holds them back. They have limiting beliefs which they use to rationalize their lack of action.
  2. Results people
These are the people who seize opportunities, and get the shit done.

Which one are you?

If you want different results, then you also need to change what you are doing. You cannot possibly “jump then grow wings on the way down”, you have to develop your wings first.

Just like in trading, many people dive straight in immediately after opening their accounts, without first bothering to learn the essential skills. This typically results in a hard and painful landing.

What a huge crowd at RWS!

He ended off with an analogy of how a strong plant needs to first spend time developing the roots, before you get to see any results above the surface. Many people give up because they do not see any immediate results.

Especially in trading, one needs to take the time to learn the proper skills instead of going for quick fix or a “get-rich quick” mentality. This is the reason why my company’s vision is “Financial Freedom for Every Individual through Education”, because the first step is always quality education.

A big thanks to Success Resources for organising this event! I had a great time, and hope to see more of such events! 😀

AFACT Anniversary Dinner 2014 – 3 Key Lessons from the Big Boys & Pit Traders

News & Events

I just got back from an exciting night at the AFACT (Association of Futures & Commodities Traders) Anniversary dinner, which was sponsored by SGX, and graced by the Former president of SGX, Mr. Ang Swee Tian, and the President of AFACT, Mr. Ng Tee Hao.

Mr. Ng shared 3 important lessons, which he called the 3S’s.

  1. Stay nimble
Nowadays, things change faster, and strategies get outdated faster. In the past, the same strategy could be used for years, but now it will typically only last 3 months or less. Therefore, as traders, we need to keep changing and evolving to come up with new strategies.
  2. Stay humble
No matter how good you are, do not be arrogant and stop learning. Read more books, and talk to more people, and treat learning as a lifelong process. Also, do not be arrogant in the market. Even if you have a lucky winning streak, always remember to have a good risk management system in place.
  3. Stay in touch
Always keep in the loop with other traders to exchange ideas and share experiences. Talk to more people to get different views, and travel more to broaden your horizons.

If you find these tips useful, feel free to share them with your friends. I think there is much wisdom in his words.

It was a rare chance to see a gathering of all the Big Boys, and to catch up as well with my former colleagues and friends. I always enjoy chatting with other real professional traders, because through sharing, I get many new insights on trading and the markets.

A big thanks to SGX and AFACT, and I’m looking forward to the next big event! Cheers! 😀
