Completed Level 1 of Certified Financial Technician (CFTe) with Score of 86

Weekly AMA on Instagram - Ask me anything about trading & investing, stock picks, market analysis, etc!

On Monday, I decided to try my hand at the Certified Financial Technician (CFTe) exams, which some claim to be the “CFA equivalent” for trading accreditation.

While I managed to pass, I was pretty sure I could have done better if I had studied for it. 😀

Why am I doing this?

Well, as a trainer, I think it is important to have some accreditation or qualifications (in addition to my double degrees and fund experience) to reassure people of the quality that they are getting. I mean, if you go to see a doctor, you would want to make sure he actually has a medical degree and the proper accreditation, and not simply trust him because he is “famous” or has a cool website/blog/video.

Hopefully, in time to come, MAS or SGX will impose some kind of minimum qualification or accreditations for all trainers, to ensure teaching standards and to prevent a market for lemons.

Wish me luck for Level 2! xD

    Dear Spencer,

I have just recently started my career as a trader, and I am required to pursue the CFTe Level 1. I have started studying for the course, however I am finding it very difficult and stressed as to what to study and how to study for the exam.

As for now I am reading the book Technical Analysis for Financial Markets and was wondering whether that is sufficient to pass the exam.

I am writing to you in order to ask for any advise/tips you can offer me.

    Your help is much appreciated.

    Kind Regards,
    Muneera

      Hi Muneera

      Thanks for reaching out.

I believe that when you signed up for the CFTe, the IFTA provided a full reading list of all the books to read. Just read all of those, and you should be fine!

      Hope this helps!

      Cheers
      Spencer
